"Safety for Syrian Refugees" by Stella

The Syrian war has caused many people to flee from their country, their home. These refugees are leaving the only place they’ve ever known, and usually taking nothing but the clothes on their back, to move to a new place. Their journey is extremely perilous though. Most are trying to get to Europe, Germany being a refuge, many try to get there. But on their way, they usually have to cross the Mediterranean. So far the death toll on the Mediterranean is 3,740 for just 2016, and these are just the deaths we know of.  Thousands of people are dying from lack of safety or lack of trustworthy resources.

The danger these refugees are facing are scamming and lack of safety. Many refugees [pay all the money they have left for a boat to Europe. Many times they are scammed or die at sea. Some boats are brought out and then left, halfway through their journey. Others are not approved in terms of safety but still start across the sea. Many have died because no government wants to provide adequate safety for them.

This means thousands of innocent lives are being lost for no other reason than lack of correct resources. People in Turkey are waking up to heartbreaking scenes of the drowned laying upon the shore. These people are crying out for our help and we must act on it. It has always been the responsibility of the country that is being used as a refuge to help these people. But in times of war where these people are fleeing around the world, it is all our responsibility to act on this and help.

In Lee’s model of migration, he explains push and pulls factors as reasons people migrate. The main thing moving these immigrants is push factors. These people are being forced to leave their lifelong home to save their life and their family’s. Much of the war in Syria is not waged on the soldiers but the people. This is the main factor involved in them having to leave.

In conclusion, this is not just an issue affecting Syrian refugees, but the whole world and humanity itself. We must help these people by doing nothing other than providing them with life jackets and boats. Did we stand by as the people affected by Hurricane Harvey were stuck in their homes because of flooding? We must provide the same kind of care for these refugees as we did for those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

  2. I think you did very well, Stella. I think this is a very sad topic, and I learned a lot about it from your blog. I liked how you talked about Lee's Model of Migration and related it to our class. This reminded me of my blog a little bit because we both talked about migration. I really enjoyed reading this.

  3. Great article Stella! I'm well aware of the Syrians travels across the Mediterranean but I've never stopped to think about how dangerous it can be. I also love how you used Lee's Model of Migration! Genius!

  4. Nice article. This topic has been a very controversial issue, but you covered the topic wonderfully. I like the reference to the Lee's model and used it to explain the issue in full. I would have liked to see more statistics on the effort to help them financially, but overall, it was almost perfect.

  6. I absolutely love the topic choice and think it is one of the worlds largest current issues. I had no idea so many refugees died on the Mediterannean. Before I read this I didn't really know how I felt about the Syrian refugee crisis but now I believe we have to send help. Also, it was written and presented perfect.
