"How Women Can Save the World" by Stella
All around the world people have been noticing changes in their crops, wildlife, forests, oceans, freshwater and weather patterns. Hurricanes Irma, Maria and Harvey are examples of how devastating the changing weather patterns can be. As the world looks for solutions to the continuous weather diasters, and other effects of global warming, a group of scientists worked together on a website, showing ways to stop global warming. These different solutions were ranked from most to least effective, and all have a small piece written about them on this website and how they will stop global warming. Suprisingly enough, women's education was 6th, and family planning 7th. So how will women's education and family planning stop global warming, and what is the importance in that?
On the subject of edcuation Project Drawdown says “Education lays a foundation for vibrant lives for girls and women, their families, and their communities. It also is one of the most powerful levers available for avoiding emissions by curbing population growth.” The education of women has a domino effect, not just on their lives or the lives of their families, but agriculture, spending habits, the future of the people around them, and the economy of the country and through that on the enviroment. Agriculture, by opening their horizons to new ideas of how to more efficiently farm, leading to more enviromentally friendly farming. Spending habits by teaching them how to do taxes, how to save and budget, or run a business, and still leaving money to innovate in ways to save energy or water. The economy will be bettered because these women know how to sucessfully run a business, they don’t have farms going bankrupt and they arent thousands of dollars in debt. With the economy of a country in better shape, more money can go to things such as renewable energy, and stopping deforestation.
The Girls Education article published by World Bank states “Girls’ education is a strategic development priority. Better educated women tend to be healthier, participate more in the formal labor market, earn higher incomes, have fewer children, marry at a later age, and enable better health care and education for their children, should they choose to become mothers. All these factors combined can help lift households, communities, and nations out of poverty.” This quote not only addresses education but also family planning. Family planning can face a big issue that we deal with in global warming, the sheer numbers of people we have. And our population just keeps growing faster and faster.
Reasearching this I have looked at many different articles, and many different solutions. So far I think the best ways to get more girls in school is just safety. Public transport is sometimes the only way for them to get to school, which is also dangerous. Enforcing safe to and from school transport is a key step in getting girls in school. In conclusion, women's education can be a big change in global warming. “If 10 percent of the world's electricity was generated using solar farms, then it’d save $5 trillion by 2050, for example. No such value could be put to educating girls and family planning—two human rights with incalculable benefits.” (Andrews, Wired)

Stella,
ReplyDeleteLike always, a very well written blog. Your first paragraph definitely caught me, and I was very informed all throughout your writing. Education is such an important aspect for me, and it's hard to imagine how some people don't catch its importance. This was a topic that builds upon general knowledge, and you did an amazing job writing it in a way that everyone could understand!
yay for you! ;)
Stella this is very well written. I agree that education is a big step that needs to be taken more seriously in LDC's, especially of women. Education is the first step in making the world better in many ways. This could lead to putting a cap on the staggering population growth, helping the world economy, and making public health more widespread. This blog is very informative and I really liked the pictures you included.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting take to solving problems, especially global warming. But now that I think about it it is a very efficient way to see fast results. The only great obstacle would be cultural discrimination against women. I support this strategy 100% though and think it's time we give ALL women equal rights to truly improve our society.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Stella! Like Shayla said, your first paragraph grabbed my attention and hooked me. We learned in class that more educated women means better economies and lower birth rates, but you took this information we know and EXPANDED IT to a more complex and interesting scale. Who knew women could save the world--literally! Women's education truly is a butterfly effect and seems like a win-win situation: better economies, a more skilled society, less global warming, and so on. If only other cultures that disapprove of women's education/ equal rights could see the true value of educating all females!
ReplyDeleteThis is very well written. You have several god talking points such as the birth rates and the general lives of the women. Education is important and i am glad that you wrote on such a important topic.
