"Tensions with Iran" by Logan W.

Iran has been in the news quite a bit lately with threats and attacks towards American bases after the death of one of their major leaders (by the United States). After President Trump’s speech earlier this month announcing the United States’ plans and restrictions on Iran after their retaliation everything seems to have settled down, until a few days ago when Iran again threatened to leave the non-proliferation treaty if European nations take its infringements of the 2015 nuclear deal to the United Nations.

The non-proliferation treaty or (NPT) is a nuclear arms treaty that controls which countries can have control of nuclear weapons and or power. With North Korea being the only nation to leave this treaty what does this mean for Iran’s future?

So what do we do to a nation that has just been restricted financially by a world power and now plans to leave a major world arms treaty. With tension growing stronger everyday how can we decrease the threat of confrontation and war?

Supranationalism is one way of helping fix and or lower tension in an area. Supranationalism is the process of nation states organizing politically and economically into one organization or alliance. Instead of individual nations accusing Iran of wrongdoing and restricting them economically we could take the problem to the United Nations. The UN could help Iran by not restricting its economy but instead try and help it become more stable both economically and politically. If we don’t help Iran the past is likely to repeat itself and could likely trigger a large war. This has happened to Germany- they were heavily taxed and in debt to many countries because of their involvement in WWI which helped the rise of Hitler and the Nazi regime during WWII.

This would mean that instead of several individual countries punishing one country separately, all the countries should join together and take the matter to the U.N. This would also lead to the possibility of Iran receiving assistance rather than restrictions. Many believe that if we help Iran they will become more stable, therefore reducing tensions. Another reason Iran is in this situation is due to its political issues. If it were possible to create a regime change then Iran might have hope of creating a more economically stable country. Due to on and off sanctions Iran is falling apart due to the fact of unemployment, inflation, and collapse in infrastructure. If the U.N. could find a way to help Iran economically and politically they might be able to reduce tensions while also creating security.

In conclusion, Iran is in trouble and needs help or they are onto a path of war and destruction of not only the nation but surrounding nations and the people themselves.

1. What do you think we should do to Iran?
2. Do you think putting economic restrictions on a nation because of wrongdoing is right?
3. Do you think Supranationalism can help Iran or is it a lost cause?

  1. I think that putting economic restrictions onto a country due to past wrongdoings is not something that should be done anymore. Germany is a prime example, after WWI they were required to pay large reparations to the Allies (even though they did not start the war, though that is neither here nor there) which destroyed their economy. This led to an unrest among the German people and using the Jews and other minority groups as scapegoats, which allowed for Hitler to come to power. I believe that a similar thing could happen with other countries, such as Iran, if we require payment for past wrongdoings. Besides, this not only hurts the Government, but it also hurts the civilians of the country. Civilians that had nothing to do with the crime that the country is being accused of.

  2. I am not sure what the best choice would be to settle tensions with Iran. I think that putting economic restrictions on countries is a very risky and potentially dangerous thing to do. With past examples of economic restrictions being devastating like that of Germany, it seems the best thing to do is to stay away from placing such restrictions. I believe supranationalism could help, but I do not think that many countries or organizations would want to be a part with Iran due to their constant political and economic unrest.

  3. I think we should try find a peaceful agreement between our two nations, even after the bombing attempts that both nations have attempted. I do think putting economic restrictions on a nation because of wrongdoing is partly right. I think they should have consequences for their action. I do think Supranationalism could help Iran, but it depends if they keep trying to attack nations.

  4. I agree with Daniel we should try and find peace. I think that restricting countries economy is not the best idea. We should just let each country cool off. I believe that supernationalsim could make an impact with the problems with Iran only if the attacks come to an end.

  5. I agree that we should not limit Iran in ways that we did Germany, but should help them improve as a stable country. The country itself has major political instability and with the help of other countries I think it could eventually overcome this. Although I don't think Iran should be completely left with consequences I don't think it needs to be done in an extreme manner.

  6. Despite Iran pulling out of the nuclear arms treaty, I do not think that is the largest concern in regards to the country. Firstly, Iran hardly has any sort of nuclear capability. While they do have a nuclear energy program, they do not have nuclear weapons capability. Iran lacks the technology and instruments needed to launch ballistic or nuclear- capable missiles. Secondly, I feel the United States should be more concerned with terrorist- style attacks directed from Iran than missile strikes. It is highly more likely that Iran would target the United States with small bombing attacks and other acts of terrorism. I feel that economic restrictions do work, but they must be enforced tightly. Loose sanctions have no effect on any country. I also feel that supranationalism would work in some instance, but Iran would have to be fully willing to let it occur. We would have to be sure that Iran would not hostile towards the United States as well.

  7. America cannot be too soft on other countries. We need to put America first. If we are too "helpful" and don't show our strength, things can get out of hand quickly. That being said, America should stand up for its values and fight injustice to an extent. No one wants a war started, but we should not and cannot allow Iran to attack Americans without a response.
